Juru Coffee Ltd started in 2009 by planting a 10-ha farm of 25,000 Arabica coffee trees in the Eastern Province, Kayonza District, Gahini Sector. Juru Coffee Ltd started a second project of coffee production in Rulindo District of the Northern Province. In Rulindo District, Juru Coffee Ltd was assigned a zone totalizing over 3000 farmers more than 600.000 coffee trees. Juru coffee model farm in Rulindo serving as Farmer Field School (FFS), and it works hard to be efficient in the best practices of coffee farming and educate farmers by live-examples. This includes efficient and timely application of fertilizers and pesticides, weeding, mulching and pruning. It’s a model that maximizes the use of land in an area like Rulindo where the population density is among the highest of the country. In Rulindo, coffee is grown on high mountains with altitude ranging between 1700-2300m above the sea level. The coffee is grown in a fertile soil sandy loam, and volcanic in some areas. With enough rain falls and moderate climate across the whole year, we have 2 harvesting seasons in Rulindo. The main season is from March to July and the short season from October-November. Ripe cherries are hand-picked from the coffee trees. Once at the washing station we proceed by hand sorting, removing defects or not ripe enough cherries. Cherries are then floated into a water tank to remain with heavy and dense high quality cherries. Cherries are then pulped with eco-friendly machine Panagos DV 255 CM and fermented for 12-18 hours depending on the weather, after which the coffee is washed and graded into a washing and grading channel using clean water. After fermenting and washing, the wet parchment coffee is put under shade on pre-drying tables for 24-48 hours as we keep sorting and removing beans with defects. The coffee is kept on drying tables for 15 to 21 days until the moisture in the coffee beans reaches 11 -12 %.
